The Auckland mayor, Len Brown, opened the new Manukau rail station today. It is the first new railway line to be built in 82 years. It will link Manukau city centre with the southern rail line at Middlemore and continue to Auckland city. The trip into the city will take 40 minutes instead of 80 minutes by bus.
The new station is underground. Above will be the campus of the Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT). This should be finished next year. MIT, Auckland Transport and Auckland Council all shared the costs. MIT hopes that travellers will see students on the trains and on the campus and this will encourage other people to become students.
Saturday 14th will be a community day for local people to see the new station. The first trains will start on April 15th. There will be three trains an hour during peak times when people are going to work in the morning and coming home in the evening. At other times, trains will run once every hour.
This is the second biggest train station in Auckland.
