Success at the Paralympics

New Zealand swimmer Sophie Pascoe has won yet another gold medal at a Tokyo Paralympics swimming event.

Pascoe fainted and vomited after winning the SM9 200m individual medley.

SM9 is a category in the Paralympics in which swimmers have severe weakness in one leg. An individual medley is a race in which each swimmer must use four different strokes of swimming: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle.

This is the fourth time Pascoe has won a gold medal in the SM9 200m individual medley, and she says it will be her last.

Between 2008 and 2020, Sophie had already won eleven gold medals at the Paralympics. She also won seven silver and one bronze medal.

At the time of writing, this year in Tokyo she has won a gold medal in the S9 100 metres freestyle, a gold in the SM9 200m individual medley, a silver in the 100m breaststroke and a bronze in the 100 metres backstroke.

Vocabulary:

stroke: a style of swimming

yet another: a phrase that shows something happens again and again

faint: to suddenly fall down as if asleep for a moment
